The pyramids still excite the imagination of people all over the world, and generate fans who obsess over them day after day! Many, especially in the USA, believe there are space creatures who came from Mars and built the Pyramids. This is not scientific at all. Many citizens from the US and other countries send me emails as anyone is able to through my website. They accuse me of blurring all the facts I discover which, in their point of view, show that the Egyptians are not the builders of the pyramids! They mistakenly believe that under the Sphinx are evidences of Atlantis! All these lies raise many false ideas about the pyramids, and the associated real facts and tales. And I dig beneath the Sphinx not only to know the level of groundwater, but to prove the absence of any evidence for this drivel. God save Egypt and its great monuments from these reckless people! A week ago, I made a phone-in with a foreign channel.
Who Built the Pyramids?

Pyramids are closely associated with the Ancient Egyptian culture, which erected these grand monuments as tombs for their Pharoahs. Although the Egyptians are credited with building the very first pyramids, they are not the only ancient cultures who built such structures — in fact, the Mesopotamians one of the first civilizations , built the earliest pyramidal structures called ziggurats. With the exception of the Caral Pyramids in Peru, all of the pyramids on this list are located in Egypt.
Year Built: c. It was built as the tomb for Menkaure, the sixth Pharaoh of the 4th dynasty. The construction of the pyramid was abandoned after Menkaure died, but was completed by successor Shepseskaf. He chose to build the pyramid on a bedrock foundation to give it the illusion that it was taller than the Great Pyramid.

The structure is said to have a lion’s body and a human head and was found in Luxor, on the east bank of the River Nile. A second sphinx dating back 4, years may have been found by construction workers in Egypt, officials have said. The statue is said to have a lion’s body and a human head and was found in Luxor, a city on the east bank of the River Nile. It was unearthed between the two famous temples of Karnak and Luxor and is about six miles from the burial place of the country’s ancient pharoahs – known as the Valley of the Kings.
General Director of Luxor Antiquities Mohamed Abdel Aziz said today that because of the nature of the environment it is in, the ‘second sphinx’ can’t be extracted directly from its place, Egypt Today reports. But no photographs have been published of the structure yet, the Independent reports. News, views and top stories in your inbox. On the path of the Ancient Stars
Current estimates for the construction of the pyramids, based on surviving lists of the pharaohs, are believed to be accurate to within about years. But Cambridge University Egyptologist Kate Spence says that by analyzing the relative position of Earth and two stars, she has dated the construction of the Great Pyramid at Giza — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — to within five years of B. That means the Great Pyramid is 4, years old — or 75 years older than one commonly accepted estimate.
Archeologists find year-old statue at Kom Ombo temple near Aswan in southern Egypt.
What ensued is something I must tell you about because in times to come it will be seen as a real turning point. In fact there is a good chance that everything you know about the lie of the land between the Sphinx, the causeway leading to the Khafre pyramid and its surroundings will have to be completely revised. Thus for Mr Hawass the fact that in certain places around the base of the Sphinx there are non-eroded blocks of stone behind undamaged facing stones proves that the Sphinx was covered with an outer facing from the beginning, while his friend the archaeologist Mark Lehner insists that the facing could only have been added during restoration in the New Kingdom.
This is the sticking point for some people because it would mean having to question the dating and the attribution of the monuments on the whole site First of all came the earth-shaking shock triggered in the s by a geology professor at Boston University, Robert M. Schoch, and the independent Egyptologist John Anthony West, who stated that the Sphinx showed evidence of erosion by very heavy rainfall.

Built in 30 years, the Pyramid at Giza was the tallest building in the world until the Accompanying the Pyramids of Giza is, the Sphinx, a gigantic figure of a lion.
The Great Sphinx of Giza , commonly referred to as the Sphinx of Giza or just the Sphinx , is a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx , a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human. The face of the Sphinx is generally believed to represent the pharaoh Khafre. Cut from the bedrock , the original shape of the Sphinx has been restored with layers of blocks.
The Sphinx is a monolith carved into the bedrock of the plateau, which also served as the quarry for the pyramids and other monuments in the area. Prior to , a large gaping shaft similar to these existed on the top of the Sphinx’s head. It is believed to have possibly been an anchoring point for a sculpted crown or headdress added during the period of the New Kingdom.
The Great Sphinx is one of the world’s largest and oldest statues, but basic facts about it are still subject to debate, such as when it was built, by whom and for what purpose. It is impossible to identify what name the creators called their statue, as the Great Sphinx does not appear in any known inscription of the Old Kingdom and there are no inscriptions anywhere describing its construction or its original purpose.
The commonly used name ” Sphinx ” was given to it in classical antiquity , about years after the commonly accepted date of its construction by reference to a Greek mythological beast with a lion ‘s body, a woman’s head and the wings of an eagle although, like most Egyptian sphinxes , the Great Sphinx has a man’s head and no wings. Selim Hassan , writing in on recent excavations of the Sphinx enclosure, summed up the problem:.
Taking all things into consideration, it seems that we must give the credit of erecting this, the world’s most wonderful statue, to Khafre, but always with this reservation: that there is not one single contemporary inscription which connects the Sphinx with Khafre; so, sound as it may appear, we must treat the evidence as circumstantial, until such time as a lucky turn of the spade of the excavator will reveal to the world a definite reference to the erection of the Sphinx.
The circumstantial evidence mentioned by Hassan includes the Sphinx’s location in the context of the funerary complex surrounding the Second Pyramid, which is traditionally connected with Khafre.

More than years ago , it is believed, masons quarried huge blocks from the limestone bedrock around and in front of the Sphinx.
These were used to build what we now call the ‘Sphinx Temple’ and the ‘Valley Temple’. This photo shows the remains of the NE corner of the Sphinx Temple and the north wall of the ‘quarry’ or enclosure in which the sphinx and the temples are located.
Mr Schoch claims the amount of water erosion the Sphinx has experienced indicates a construction date no later than the 6th millennium BC or.
How Old Are The Pyramids? The precise age of the pyramids of Giza has long been debated because, until now, there has been little evidence to prove when the pyramids were built. The history books generally point to B. But how exactly do Egyptologists date the pyramids? Like past excavations, the current dig at Giza attempts to bring us closer to pinpointing the time period during which the pyramids were built.
NOVA Online’s interviews with two experts reveal the results of recent carbon dating on the pyramids, and shed further light on the process Egyptologists must go through to decipher the age of these great monuments. NOVA Online invites those who have questions or comments about the age of the pyramids and the Sphinx to e-mail the excavation. Is this possible?
Until now there is no evidence at all that has been found in any place, not only at Giza, but also in Egypt.

It is the largest and oldest papyrus in the whole world, dating back to the reign of King Khufu, and the first known description of how Khufu’s.
Pyramid of Khafre is in background. It was an odd sensation climbing over the Great Pyramid, looking for minute flecks of charcoal or other datable material, loaded down with cameras, scales, notebooks, and forms with entries for sample number, site, monument, area, feature, material charcoal, reed, wood, etc. It was and the Edgar Cayce Foundation, named for an early twentieth-century psychic who claimed that the Sphinx and Khufu’s Great Pyramid were built in 10, B.
Old friends and supporters of the deceased psychic had visited Giza in the early s and several of them were willing to put their beliefs to the test by radiocarbon dating the Great Pyramid. Archaeologists believe it is the work of the Old Kingdom Dynasty 4 society that rose to prominence in the Nile Valley from ca. The radiocarbon dates from monuments spanning Dynasty 3 Djoser to late Dynasty 5 Unas , averaged years older than the Cambridge Ancient History dates of the kings with whom the pyramids are identified.
In spite of this discrepancy, the radiocarbon dates confirmed that the Great Pyramid belonged to the historical era studied by Egyptologists. In dealing with the year discrepancy, we had to consider the old wood problem. In we thought it was unlikely that the pyramid builders consistently used centuries-old Egyptian wood as fuel in preparing mortar.
Ancient Egypt’s population was compressed in the narrow confines of the Nile Valley with a tree cover, we assumed, that was sparse compared to less arid lands. We expected that by the pyramid age the Egyptians had been intensively exploiting wood for fuel for a long time and that old trees had been harvested long before. The results left us with too little data to conclude that the historical chronology of the Old Kingdom was in error by nearly years, but we considered this at least a possibility.
Alternatively, if our radiocarbon age estimations were in error for some reason, we had to assume that many other dates obtained from Egyptian materials were also suspect.
Great Sphinx of Giza
There are countless monuments scattered across the globe. Standing guard not far from the three main pyramids at Giza , the Great Sphinx is the guardian of the plateau. The majestic monument, shrouded in complete mystery is the oldest, largest and strangest monuments ever carved by human hands. Between its incredible mythology, its obscure origins, and connections to realms beyond our own, the Great Sphinx is a treasure unlike any other.
Standing guard southeast of the pyramids, the majestic statue with the body of a lion, and head of a human has been worshiped for thousands of years.
Researchers such as John Anthony West and R.A. Schwaller de Lubicz observed signs of weathering due to rainfall on the Sphinx, dating the construction of this.
Great Sphinx of Giza , colossal limestone statue of a recumbent sphinx located in Giza , Egypt , that likely dates from the reign of King Khafre c. The statue was carved from a single piece of limestone, and pigment residue suggests that the entire Great Sphinx was painted. According to some estimates, it would have taken about three years for workers, using stone hammers and copper chisels, to finish the statue. Most scholars date the Great Sphinx to the 4th dynasty and affix ownership to Khafre.
These theorists claim that the face of the Great Sphinx bears more resemblance to Khufu than Khafre, and that observation also led to speculation that Khufu himself built the statue. The Great Sphinx has greatly deteriorated over the years, and since ancient times—possibly beginning in the reign of Thutmose IV — bce —various efforts have been undertaken to preserve the statue. Whereas the body has suffered the most erosion , the face has also been damaged, and its nose is notably missing.
